But even before him a loose form of Toxicology was around; the First Nations Shamans have been studying plants and their poisons for many century's. In the 1830's English chemist James Marsh discovered a prefect way of discovering arsenic in the human body; his method is the basis of what we do today. Yet even before him in 1787 Johann Daniel Metzger found a way to detect arsenic in solutions.
